Pacific Northwest
A completely different campervan experience
Overview
Unlike the Desert Southwest, the experience here is heavily shaped by weather.
The Pacific Northwest offers a completely different campervan experience — defined by dense forests, rugged coastlines, and dramatic mountain ranges. It’s a region where the scenery feels wild and untouched, and where the journey itself is just as rewarding as the destinations.
The Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit is during the summer months, from June through September, when conditions are at their most stable and rainfall is at its lowest.
Outside of this window, the region becomes far less predictable. Autumn brings a mix of rain and beautiful fall colours, while winter is often grey, wet, and snowy at higher elevations. Spring can be equally variable, with conditions changing quickly from one day to the next.
Climate & Conditions
Rain is a defining feature of the Pacific Northwest. Coastal areas and forests receive significant rainfall for much of the year, creating the lush landscapes the region is known for.
Even in summer, it’s worth being prepared for occasional rain. Higher elevations — particularly in the Cascades — can see snow well outside of winter, which can impact access to certain areas.
Where to Go
Some of the most iconic destinations in the region include Olympic National Park, with its mix of coastline and rainforest, and North Cascades National Park, known for its alpine scenery and quieter trails.
Mount Rainier dominates the landscape and offers incredible hiking opportunities in summer, while national forests like Gifford Pinchot and Willamette provide more flexibility for camping and exploration.
Seasonal Travel Advice
Summer is the most reliable and accessible time to explore, with clear trails and open roads across most of the region.
Autumn can be rewarding for those willing to accept some rain, with fewer crowds and vibrant seasonal colours. Winter travel is more limited, particularly for campervans, due to snow and road closures in mountainous areas.
Spring is unpredictable but can still be enjoyable with a flexible plan and the right gear.
Campervan Travel Tips
A campervan is a great way to explore the Pacific Northwest, particularly because it gives you the ability to adapt to changing weather conditions.
Pack for wet weather regardless of when you visit, and allow extra time in your itinerary in case conditions shift. Campsites can be in high demand during peak summer, so planning ahead is important.
